Command + shift + 3 or Command + shift + 4 on Mac allows you to capture and save to your desktop a snapshot image of your entire screen (3) or a portion of it (4).
If you want to take a screenshot and just paste it somewhere, do a Control + command + shift + 3 or 4.

Bonus: Facebook messages accepts direct copy + paste'd screenshots! ;)
